From the shores of Sebastian to the West Marsh of the Blue Cypress Recreation Area, Indian River County has a watersport that will surely interest you.
Kayaking with Kristen Beck of A Florida Outdoor Center proved to be one of my favorite activities on this trip. Despite actually owning a kayak, I have never been in the lagoon. It was relaxing, perfectly paced, and scenic. A few dolphins made an appearance as we paddled to an out island. Several of the group took a nature walk while Bobbi and I collected shells and played with hermit crabs along the shore.
No trip to Florida is complete without an airboat adventure and there is no better place than the Blue Cypress Recreation Area. This area is home to many airboat companies and the west and east marshes offer completely different ecosystems to explore. On this trip, fourth generation Vero Beach Native Captain Lawrence of Florida Cracker Airboats provided us with an environmental history of the St. John’s back waters in the west marsh.
Evenings in Vero Beach are best spent aboard the Sail Moonraker, a 40 foot luxury catamaran, in the Indian River Lagoon. Captain Bruce and crew provide a leisurely ride as the sun sets over Indian River county.
